Mark W. Chase

Mark Wayne Chase (* 1951 ) is a British-American botanist and geneticist. Its official botanical author abbreviation is " MWChase ".

Chase studied at Albion College with a bachelor's degree in 1973 and at the University of Michigan with a master's degree in 1980 and a doctorate in 1985 (Dissertation: A Monograph of Leochilus (Orchidaceae) (Mexico, Central America, South America)). From 1988 he was an assistant professor at the University of North Carolina . He is Keeper at the Jodrell Laboratory of the Royal Botanic Gardens in Kew and Senior Research Professor there. He has been in Kew since 1992 and has headed the Jodrell Laboratory since 2006.

He is visiting professor at Queen Mary College, University of London.

He is a member of the Angiosperm Phylogeny Group (APG), a classification project for angiosperms based on their DNA. Chase did particular research on the evolution and phylogenetics of orchids and the role of polyploidy and epigenetics in the evolution of angiosperms (especially tobacco plants). He is one of the editors of the Genera Orchidacearum series .

He is a Fellow of the Royal Society (2003). Chase received the Darwin Wallace Medal in 2008 , the Linnaeus Medal in 1998 and the Veitch Memorial Medal of the Royal Horticultural Society in 2014 . He has been the editor of Phytotaxa since 2009 . He has been the Editorial Secretary of the Linnean Society of London since 2013 .

With co-authors, he introduced over 800 new botanical names.
