The Markakol ( Kazakh Маркаколь көлі ; Russian озеро Маркаколь ) is a lake in the East Kazakhstan Region in Kazakhstan .
The lake is located in the east of the country not far from the border with China. Markakol is at an altitude of 1449 m above sea level. The lake is 449 square kilometers and the maximum depth is 30 meters. The Qalschyr drains the lake on its west bank and flows southwest to the Irtysh .
A 57 km long road connects the place Urunchaika on the east bank of the lake over the Altaiski pass and the Burchat pass (2142 m) with the place Tschingistai in the north. It was built by Austrian prisoners of war in 1916/17. These were captured as part of the Brusilov Offensive in World War I in June 1916 and brought to Kazakhstan (then: the General Government of Turkestan ). It is called Österreicherstraße and is hardly passable anymore.
