Markku Juhani Uusipaavalniemi (born November 23, 1966 in Karkkila ) is a Finnish curler and politician .

His greatest success so far is winning the gold medal at the 2000 European Championship in Oberstdorf . In addition, he won two bronze medals at world championships (1998 in Kamloops and 2000 in Glasgow ) and two bronze medals at European championships (1999 in Chamonix and 2001 in Vierumäki ).

In 2005 Uusipaavalniemi won the first mixed European championship in Andorra , together with Kirsi Nykänen , Teemu Salo and Tiina Kautonen . At the 2006 Winter Olympics , he won the silver medal.

At the 2006 Curling Continental Cup he was named best player.

His nickname is "U-15" or "M-15", where fifteen is the number of letters in his last name. He lives in Hyvinkää , works part-time as a mathematician and can complete a Rubik's cube within half a minute .

In March 2007 Uusipaavalniemi was elected as a member of the Finnish Parliament . He was initially a member of the Center Party and joined the Basic Finns Party (also known as True Finns ) in 2010 and was a member of the Basic Finns faction in parliament from until April 2011.
