history

Town hall with fountain and in the background the northern buildings of the square

The square was the center of the settlement very early on, which the dense historical buildings here still show today. Local residents were first mentioned in 1213. The first known residents were Bolandische Mühle around 1250, Drechers Hof around 1410, a farm called "Zum Baum" and the inn "Zum Löwen" which was closed in 1875 and a wine tavern was built in its place by Louis Weitzel. The first town hall was built in 1608, which was replaced by a building in the classical style in 1827. In 1529 the square got a fountain called "Löwche". (Because of a lion figure that sat on the fountain column and held the Electoral Palatinate and the city arms of Ober-Ingelheim with his paws). However, in 1901 the fountain had to give way to a war memorial for the Franco-Prussian War of 1870–71 . Towards the end of the 18th century, weekly markets and three annual markets were held here, as well as a fruit market. Due to the increasing volume of traffic, this monument was also removed in 1970 and rebuilt opposite the castle church. Much of the original development has also been lost over the past centuries.

Space design

Since 2007 it has been paved with natural stone paving in the sidewalk area and in the traffic area with concrete stone paving and since 2009 again with a fountain on the corner of Stiegelgasse / Neuweg. In addition, old town street lighting and metal polders to delimit the roadway.
