The House Market Street 3 is a half-timbered building in the old town of Wernigerode , Harz district , in Saxony-Anhalt . It is a building used as a residential and commercial building, which was inhabited by various mayors of the city in the 16th and 17th centuries.

The Marktstrasse 3 building is located in the southern part of Wernigerode's city center, just a few meters from the market square, on the east side of Marktstrasse , whose shopping street begins not far from the house.

Architecture and history

It is a two-story half-timbered house with an attic from the 18th century. There are different assumptions about the year of construction.

In 1558 the mayor of Wernigerode, Thomas Schütze, lived in this house . Remembered today as it passes to the neighboring market street 1 the bower of 1556 .

In this house "on the market" in Wernigerode, which at that time belonged to the mayor Michael Puelmann, the wedding party of Anna von Stolberg and Dr. Johann Behrendes from Goslar. Anna von Stolberg was the biological daughter of the ruling Count Wolf Ernst zu Stolberg from his illegitimate relationship with Catharina Lappe.

The building used to have the location list number 626. At that time it was a residential building with a courtyard, a slaughterhouse and a transverse stable. The owner of the house was the butcher Karl Voss and his family in 1895/1896, who ran a butcher shop here. After his death, the house was sold to the master plumber Wilhelm Brauckhoff.

In 1908, the house caused a sensation when a skeleton was allegedly found in the basement of the rear building belonging to Marktstrasse 3.

In the local register of monuments , the house is not listed as an individual architectural monument , but belongs to the historic city center.
