Markus Cerman
Markus Cerman (born July 27, 1967 in Vienna ; † October 3, 2015 ) was an Austrian historian and associate professor . He was head of the Institute for Economic and Social History at the University of Vienna .
Live and act
In 1985, Cerman began studying history and selected subjects at the University of Vienna and from the winter semester 1985/86 studied history and social studies as well as English and American studies for teaching at secondary schools. In October 1991 he graduated with a Mag. Phil. from. He then worked from 1991 to 1992 as a research assistant at Dr. Karl Renner Institute (Department of History and Politics), completed a doctoral degree in history at the University of Vienna between 1992 and 1996 and received his doctorate in October 1996 with distinction. During his doctoral studies, Cerman worked between 1992 and 1993 as a research assistant for the Association for Documentation of Biographical Records at the Institute for Economic and Social History at the University of Vienna and was a university assistant at the institute there from 1993 to 2001. In April 1997 he completed his habilitation and was appointed university lecturer. Between 1997 and 1998 he was a Research Associate at the Cambridge Group for the History of Population and Social Structure at the University of Cambridge with a fellowship at Robinson College, Cambridge. In 2001 Ceman was appointed associate professor at the Institute for Economic and Social History at the University of Vienna. In addition, between 2005 and 2006 he was a Humboldt Research Fellow and visiting researcher at the Institute for the Comparative History of Europe in the Middle Ages at the Humboldt University in Berlin . Between 2012 and 2014 he was the deputy head of the Institute for Economic and Social History at the University of Vienna, where he has been the head of the institute since 2014.
Cerman's main research interests were in the areas of economy, society and institutions in pre-industrial Europe since the Middle Ages, in comparative agricultural history in the Middle Ages and in the early modern period, in rural social structures and rulings in the late Middle Ages and in modern times in European comparison, in the European Proto -Industrialization and industrialization as well as in historical demography and historical-social-scientific family research.
