Markus Salcher (born June 1, 1991 in Klagenfurt , Carinthia ) is an Austrian disabled athlete specializing in alpine skiing .

Career

The Carinthian, who has been paralyzed on one side since his birth and who works for the Klagenfurt customs office, starts in the alpine skiing competitions and made his international debut at the beginning of 2010. In Vancouver , he was not yet a great success at the 2010 Winter Paralympics . After finishing 20th in the slalom, he retired in the giant slalom. In the Super-G he achieved a good top 10 result with eighth place. At the 2011 Alpine World Ski Championships for the disabled , Salcher achieved fifth place in the downhill and two ninth places in the Super G and in the super combination.

His breakthrough came at the 2013 Alpine World Ski Championships for the disabled in La Molina , Spain , where he won gold medals in the downhill as well as in the Super-G.

At the 2014 Winter Paralympics in Sochi , Salcher won two gold medals in the standing competition. After the first in the downhill, he secured his second gold in the Super-G in front of his team-mate Matthias Lanzinger .

Salcher won the bronze medal in the giant slalom.

At the 2015 Alpine World Ski Championships for the disabled in Panorama , Canada , he won silver in giant slalom and combined.

In 2018 he won the bronze medal in the downhill and in the super-G at the 2018 Winter Paralympics in Pyeongchang .
