Markus Scheibel (doctor)

Markus Scheibel is a German orthopedic surgeon and trauma surgeon . He is chief physician in the upper extremities department at the Orthopedic Clinic at the Schulthess Clinic in Zurich and has been a visiting professor at the Charité in Berlin since June 2018 . His main focus is shoulder surgery.

Career

Markus Scheibel grew up in Polling in Upper Bavaria (near Mühldorf am Inn) and from 1984 attended the Ruperti-Gymnasium in Mühldorf am Inn .

His gymnastics career ended at the age of 15 when he suffered paralysis after a fall. The experiences with the subsequent medical treatments and in the rehab with a positive outcome made him want to become a doctor himself.

He studied medicine at the University of Leipzig from 1994 to 2001 and received his doctorate in 2002 . From 2001 to the end of 2002 he was employed as an intern with Peter Habermeyer at the ATOS clinic in Heidelberg. In December 2002 he moved to Andreas Imhoff in Munich in the department and polyclinic for sports orthopedics at the Klinikum rechts der Isar . In 2004 he moved to the Charité-Universitätsmedizin Berlin, where he qualified as a specialist in orthopedics and trauma surgery in 2008 and completed his habilitation in 2009 in orthopedics and trauma surgery.

After stays at the University of California, San Francisco , USA, the University of Cape Town , Cape Town, South Africa, and the Louisiana State University , New Orleans, USA, he was the senior physician and senior physician in the shoulder and elbow surgery department at Charité Berlin, where from 2012 to May 2018 he was a full professor for arthroscopy and sports medicine with a focus on shoulder surgery at the Center for Musculoskeletal Surgery (CMSC) and at the Center for Sports Science and Sports Medicine Berlin (CSSB). On July 1, 2018, he became the chief physician of the upper extremities department at the Orthopedic Clinic at the Schulthess Clinic in Zurich.

Markus Scheibel has been President of the German Association for Shoulder and Elbow Surgery (DVSE), chairman of the “Qualification” committee of the European Shoulder and Elbow Society (SECEC / ESSSE) and a member of numerous orthopedic specialist societies (including the Society for Joint Surgery and Arthroscopy AGA) since 2015.

Teaching

Markus Scheibel was co-organizer of shoulder courses at the Klinikum rechts der Isar and at the Charité-Universitätsmedizin Berlin from 2003 and has been the scientific director of the biennial Paris International Shoulder Course (PISC) since 2015. Scheibel founded the Berlin International Shoulder Course (BISC) in 2016.
