Philosophy and philosophy didactics

Tiedemann understands philosophy didactics as a theoretical-conceptual, a methodical-practical and an empirical-critical science. Conceptually, Tiedemann represents problem-oriented philosophy didactics, which he understands as an accentuation of Ekkehard Martens' thesis on cultural technology. On the methodological and practical level, Tiedemann advocates a varied design of philosophy and ethics lessons. However, he is critical of the equality of presentational and discursive forms and insists on understanding the essence of philosophical education as a category-based, argumentative justification. In the dispute over the use of empirical teaching research within philosophy didactics, Tiedemann took a mediating position that emphasizes both possibilities and limits. He agrees with Volker Steenblock that numerous philosophical virtues cannot be evaluated. In addition, the legitimation of philosophical education goes beyond empirical findings. At the same time, however, existing options should be used to assess the acceptance, compatibility and efficiency of philosophical educational offers.

With the concept of transcendental tolerance education, Tiedemann reacts to the so-called “values-mediation dilemma”. In modern times, ethical orientation cannot refer to ultimate justifications. However, this does not mean that “anything goes”. The act of orientation consists in distinguishing between better and worse justifications according to the degree of their coherence, their reciprocity, their intersubjective communicability and their inclusion of the other. Tiedemann speaks of a modest or self-critical universalism, the derivation of which he refers to, among others, Rainer Forst, Julian Nida-Rümelin, Jürgen Habermas, Ernst Tugendhat, Rawls and Kant.

In his main research areas, Tiedemann u. a. with the influence of philosophical education on de-radicalization processes, with normative questions of migration, synergy effects between experiential education and philosophical education as well as right-wing radical falsification of history.

In the public space, Tiedemann has repeatedly called for mandatory philosophy or ethics lessons. He was also involved in numerous debates on questions of criticism of religion, migration policy and medical ethics.
