Miami Pop Festival

Miami Pop Festival was the name of two different music festivals held in Florida in 1968 . The venue was the Gulfstream Park racecourse in Hallandale Beach , just north of Miami .

Miami Pop Festival I

The first Miami Pop Festival on May 18-19, 1968 was hosted by Richard O'Barry and Michael Lang , who co-organized the Woodstock Festival in 1969 . Speaking at a memorial service on July 4, 2012 at Gulfstream Park, Lang said, " This is where the seeds for Woodstock were sown ."

An estimated 50,000 to 100,000 visitors saw performances by Steppenwolf , The Jimi Hendrix Experience , The Mothers of Invention , Blue Cheer , The Crazy World of Arthur Brown , Chuck Berry , Pacific Gas & Electric, and Three Dog Night, among others .

The second day it rained so hard that no electric instruments were played on the stage. Only John Lee Hooker performed with his acoustic guitar. Jimi Hendrix then wrote the song Rainy Day, Dream Away.

Miami Pop Festival II

The second Miami Pop Festival followed from December 28 to 30, 1968. Organizer was Tom Rounds , who had previously organized the Fantasy Fair and Magic Mountain Music Festival on Mount Tamalpais in Marin County , California . An estimated 100,000 spectators came.

Performing bands and musicians included Procol Harum , The Turtles , The Grass Roots , Three Dog Night , José Feliciano , The Box Tops , the Paul Butterfield Blues Band , Hugh Masekela , Pacific Gas & Electric , Fleetwood Mac , Richie Havens , The Sweet Inspirations , Joni Mitchell , Jr. Walker & The Allstars , The McCoys , Sweetwater , The James Cotton Blues Band , Canned Heat , the Charles Lloyd Quartet , Booker T. & the MG's , Ian & Sylvia , Country Joe and the Fish , Buffy St Marie , Steppenwolf , The Amboy Dukes , Iron Butterfly , Chuck Berry , Flatt and Scruggs , Grateful Dead , Marvin Gaye , Joe Tex and others.

A comic booklet was distributed during the festival featuring many of the artists as superheroes. Various sculptures were placed on the site, including some by Duane Hanson .
