Sweetwater is an American rock band.

history

The group was founded by Nancy Nevins, Alex Del Zoppo and Fred Herrera in Los Angeles , USA and was one of the first ethnically mixed bands. Her debut album included psychedelic rock based on folk and jazz . You can think of it as the Jefferson Airplane , influenced by cellos , flutes, and Ornette Coleman . After that they played at countless festivals as openers for many greats of the time such as B. Eric Burdon & The Animals , Jimi Hendrix , Linda Ronstadt , Paul Butterfield , Cream , Grateful Dead , Frank Zappa and The Mothers, The Who , Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young , Jefferson Airplane, Joe Cocker , Santana , Buffalo Springfield , The Doors , Jerry Lee Lewis , Big Brother And The Holding Company , Bing Crosby , James Brown and Chuck Berry .

Sweetwater was finally known through their appearance at the Woodstock Festival on August 15, 1969. Sweetwater was the first band with Woodstock after three solo artists. Originally, they should have acted as the opener, but like many others got stuck in traffic and had to be flown in by helicopter . Since the instruments had already been set up, but there had been no sound check , the band was very dissatisfied with their 45-minute performance.

After Woodstock, however, the band's history was interrupted: the singer Nancy Nevins was seriously injured in a car accident in December 1969. The band broke up - after two more albums without Nevins - as a result.

In 1994, however, the band reunited during the Woodstock II concert. In addition to the founding members, drummer Mike Williams and guitarist Joe Bruley joined the band.

In 1999 the story of the band was released as a television film by the US music channel VH1 .
