Marpesia petreus is a butterfly ( butterfly ) fromthe noble butterfly family (Nymphalidae).
features
butterfly
The wingspan of the moth is 70 to 95 millimeters. The basic color of the upper side of all wings is orange and traversed by three thin straight black lines, which bend inwards directly at the front edge of the forewings and which continue on the hind wings. There is also a short black line in the discal region on the forewings . The apex ends in a point that protrudes far outwards. The edge of the hind wings is brownish. A long, straight tail is typical of the species, as is also found in many species of the knightly butterfly (Papilionidae). At the apex there is another, much shorter tail. The underside of the wing shows a gray-brown to red-brown basic color with a black line extending over the front and rear wings.

The eggs are pale yellow in color.
Caterpillar
Adult caterpillars are extremely colorful and striking. They are alternately pink, blue-green, black, and white in color. The head is reddish and has two thin black horns, the sides are blue-green and red, large parts of the back are white, sometimes yellow. The belly legs are white and have a black point and slashes above. There are long, straight thorns on the second, fourth, and sixth segments, as well as at the end of the abdomen.
Doll
The doll has either a light green or a gray-white basic color and is provided with dark spots. A long and a few short tips can be seen on the abdomen. There are two short thorns on the wing sheaths and two more, slightly curved ones on the head.
Occurrence and habitat
Marpesia petreus occurs in Brazil , Peru , Suriname , Mexico , Puerto Rico and the Lesser Antilles , as well as north to Florida . Immigrants were reported from Texas (regularly) and Nebraska (rarely). The species mainly inhabits subtropical forest areas.
Way of life
The moths fly in several generations throughout the year. They suck on blossoms or damp places in the earth. The caterpillars feed on the leaves of the mulberry family (Moraceae), in Florida on the common fig ( Ficus carica ), Ficus aurea and Ficus brevifolia and in Central and South America on Ficus citrifolia and Ficus padifolia .
