Marracuene (District)

Marracuene is a district of the Maputo province in Mozambique with the administrative seat in the eponymous town of Marracuene . The district borders the capital Maputo in the south, the Matola and Moamba districts in the west and the Manhiça district in the north . To the east is the Indian Ocean .

population

The Marracuene district is 703 square kilometers and had a population of 60,471 people in 2007, which corresponds to a population density of 87 inhabitants per square kilometer. Compared to the 1997 population census - at that time there were 41,677 people in the Marracuene district - the number has increased by 45 percent. The population is on average very young, around 41 percent of all residents are under 15 years of age and the majority are rural; around 25 percent live in urbanized areas.

Facilities and services

There are 47 schools in the Marracuene district, 37 of which are primary schools ( escolas do ensino primário ). There are also 18 health centers for the medical care of the population.

In the village of Marracuene itself there is a branch of the state post office Correios de Moçambique . Furthermore, a Mozambican bank, the formerly state-owned Millennium bim , has a branch in the district, also directly in Marracuene in the Macanhine district.

Administrative division

The Marracuene district is divided into two administrative posts ( postos administrativos ):

  • Marracuene with the surrounding villages Sede, Michafutene e Nhongonhane
  • Machubo with the surrounding villages Taula and Macandza.

In contrast to the Boane, Manhiça, Matola and Namaacha districts, the Marracuene district is not a munizip ( município ), so that it only has very limited rights to self-government.

traffic

The Marracuene district is accessed by the important EN1 highway . It is a national road between the Maputo agglomeration and northern Mozambique and is one of the country's most important traffic arteries. The Linha de Limpopo (Maputo – Zimbabwe) railway also runs through the district.
