The EN1 road , the only connection between north and south Mozambique , runs through the village .

Marracuene is also connected to the national rail network of Mozambique via the Linha de Limpopo railway line , which continues to Zimbabwe . There is a non-clocked suburban traffic of the state railway company CFM .

history

The first documentary mention by the Portuguese colonial power is dated to 1895. In 1895 there was a battle between the Portuguese colonial power under António José Enes and the Bantu King Gungunhana .

In 1946 the colonial government raised the place to the district administrative seat (Conselho) under the name Villa Luísa . After Mozambique gained independence in 1975, the place was given the new name Marracuene.

With the steady population growth of Mozambique and the steady rural exodus, Marracuene has meanwhile grown into a full-fledged suburb of Maputo. This sometimes creates great economic and social contrasts between the main town of Marracuene and its very rural surroundings.

economy

As in large parts of Mozambique, Marracuene is mainly characterized by subsistence agriculture .

In addition, Marracuene has a seaside resort in the small town of Macaneta , where numerous tourist facilities have found their place. In particular, people from the nearby capital go to Macaneta due to the poor quality of the beaches in Maputo. Until 2018 it was necessary to use a small ferry to reach Macaneta, on the other side of the Incomati . In the course of construction work on the Maputo ring road , the ferry was replaced by a bridge in 2018.
