Marsh & McLennan was founded in Chicago in 1905 by Henry W. Marsh and Donald R. McLennan.

In 2010, Marsh & McLennan Companies sold the Kroll Inc. division. This now acts as an independent company.

In the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001 , 295 company employees died in the World Trade Center when American Airlines Flight 11 hit the North Tower. Marsh & McLennan lived on floors 93 to 100, with the Boeing 767 hitting floors 93 to 99, down to the 100th floor, where Marsh & McLennan lived.
