Marshall C. Yovits

Marshall C. Yovits (born May 16, 1923 in Brooklyn , † May 4, 2018 in Deerfield, Illinois) was an American physicist and computer scientist .

Yovits graduated from Union College in Schenectady with a bachelor's degree in physics in 1944. He then worked for the National Advanced Committee for Aeronautics in Langley Field , Virginia. He continued his studies at Union College with a master’s degree in 1948 and received a PhD in physics from Yale University in 1951 . From 1948 to 1950 he was also an instructor at Yale. After completing his doctorate, he went to the Johns Hopkins University at the Laboratory for Applied Physics and from 1956 to 1966 he worked for the Office of Naval Research in Washington, DC , where he set up the information systems department. From 1962 to 1966 he also headed the Military Operations Research Society .

In 1966 he became professor and head of the computer science department at Ohio State University , where he was director of the Computer and Information Science Research Center . In 1980 he went to Indiana University-Purdue University (IUPUI) in Indianapolis as dean of the School of Science , which he remained until 1988. Until his retirement in 1993 he was also professor of computer science there.

From 1971 to 1994 he edited the Academic Press book series Advances in computers .

In 1989 he received the Computer Pioneer Award . He received an Outstanding Performance Award and a Superior Civilian Service Award from the US Navy . He was elected a Fellow of the Association for Computing Machinery in 1996 .
