Marti Epstein

Marti Epstein (born November 25, 1959 in Denver / Colorado ) is an American composer and music teacher.

Epstein began her musical training in 1977 at the University of Nebraska with Robert Beadell . She continued her studies at the University of Colorado (until 1982) and at Boston University , where Charles Eakin , Joyce Mekeel and Bernard Rands were among her teachers, and she received her master's degree in 1984 and her doctoral degree in composition in 1989. During two stays at the Tangelwood Music Center (1986 and 1988) she studied composition with Oliver Knussen and Hans Werner Henze . From 1989 to 1991 she taught keyboard at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology . Since 1991 she has been teaching composition at Berklee College of Music , since 2006 as a professor.

At Henze's invitation, she came to Munich in 1992 and composed the puppet opera Hero and Leander for the Biennale for New Music Theater . She received further composition commissions a. a. by guitarist David Tanenbaum , tuba player Samuel Pilafian , flutist Marianne Gedigian , pianist Kathleen Supove , the New England Brass Quintet , the Boston Conservatory , the Boston University Marsh Chapel Choir and the Pro Arte Chamber Orchestra of Boston . In 1998 the San Francisco Symphony premiered their orchestral piece Celestial Navigation under the direction of Alisdair Neale .
