Martial-Louis de Beaupoil de Saint-Aulaire (born January 1, 1719 in Barry , today in the Hautes-Pyrénées department , † March 17, 1798 in Freiburg im Breisgau ) was a French bishop .

Life

Martial-Louis de Beaupoil de Saint-Aulaire came from an old noble family from the Limousin , which produced several generals, bishops and a member of the Académie Française . Martial-Louis belonged to a younger branch of the family; he was born in 1719 at Barry Castle. He was made Bishop of Poitiers on February 17, 1759 and consecrated on May 13, 1759.

Elected to the National Assembly by the clergy of the Sénéchaussée Poitou in 1789 , Mgr. De Saint-Aulaire vigorously opposed the clergy's commitment to the civil constitution and the appointment of constitutional bishops and went into exile after the end of the session. He died there in 1798.
