The coat of arms of the line from Martial to Burg Bröl

The noble family von Martial is an apparently old noble family, which partially impoverished and became bourgeois in one branch. The de Martial or von Martial family is believed to be descended from the de St. Martial family from Saint Martial , near Limoges , in the Limousin prefecture, mentioned in the 12th century . The French branches of the family, de Martial de la Roche Hugon and de Martial de Boissé, should also be mentioned here.

Luxembourg line

Around 1400 a branch of the family settled in Luxembourg, in the former Burgundian Empire (in today's Belgium, province of Luxembourg), which belonged to the Holy Roman Empire . The family with the noble Adrian Martial and the hottest lady Jeanne Pirad appear here as lords of Frandeux (near Namur) in the middle of the 16th century . According to a document in the Namur Archives, it is called Les Martial se sont prétendu nobles (the Martial family pretends to be noble) but cannot prove their origin. However, other sources ( Papiers de Bleret / Namur Archives ) show that as early as 1408 the Seigneur Martial performed administrative tasks for the Frandeux district. This is another reason why the family seems to be treated with "noble respect". With Wautier, Rittmeister and Captain-Major of Briquemont and his wife Marguerite Bechet, daughter of Philippe Bechet and Catherine Kaye, the Martials acquire Frandeux Castle near Rochefort on December 2, 1622 . In 1650 Frandeux was given jurisdiction.

From the marriage of Wautier de Martial († May 3, 1634) and Marguerite de Bechet († August 15, 1636), among others, Lambert de Martial emerged, who married into the old Luxembourg noble family de Scouville (also Scoville). His wife was Madeleine de Scouville, daughter of Gilles de Scouville, General Manager of the Spanish King in Luxembourg. Her son Jean Baptiste Maximilien Charles, Johann Baptist Max Carl von Martial founded the Rhenish branch of the family.

Rhenish line

Johann Baptist Max Carl von Martial was a colonel in the Palatinate Army and received the baron diploma on March 29, 1708. On May 20, 1711 he received the imperial vicariate baron diploma from Elector Johann Wilhelm von der Pfalz with the hereditary predicate well-born and with the confirmation of the traditional coat of arms. Johann Baptist Max Carl von Martial was married to Maria Anna Agnes von Baexen, who brought Veynau Castle into the marriage. In addition, at the beginning of the 18th century, the family acquired the glories Moestroff and Noville in Luxembourgish and the glory Gartzem. Maria Anna Agnes von Baexen († May 27, 1737) was buried in the Ravengiersburg monastery.

The son Johann Werner Philipp Anton von Martial († 1746) was a cavalry captain and chamberlain of the Palatinate . He was married to Philippina Odilia Freifrau von Gymnich zu Vlatten and thereby received Gut Birlinghoven . In addition, around 1725, through the proceeds of the sale of the Noville estate with all its goods, the two acquired the moated castle Peppenhoven near Rheinbach, which was to remain in the family's possession until the early 19th century.

Their son Carl Georg Jakob (~ July 14, 1738 Stieldorf) married Catharina Gertrud Thurn († October 10, 1768) from Mülheim on September 26, 1763 in Mülheim am Rhein . In his second marriage on January 21, 1770, he married Maria Carolina Franzisca Freiin von Neunkirchen called Nievenheim from Herrenbröl . The family lived on the Birlinghoven farm.

Their children were:

  1. Franz Christoph Michael Benedict (born January 22, 1765 - † September 1, 1826 in Beuel ), soldier and innkeeper at the black eagle in Bonn-Beuel
  2. Godfriede Henriette Maria Josephina (* October 24, 1766 - March 19, 1840), heiress of Gut Birlinghoven and wife of the district administrator Franz Joseph Scheven († 1837)

One of the sons of Johann Franz Adolph Wolfgang von Martial, Josef von Martial, married to Anna Theresia Kalberkamp, appears as the last owner of parts of Herrenbröl Castle. He had to sell the property a few years before his death in 1894. His son Carl von Martial, who was an officer pupil at Jülich around 1865, was stripped of his title of nobility in 1867 because of misconduct in his service. Carl Martial carried this on, however, illegally. It was not until 1900 that the Heroldsamt zu Berlin became aware of his case. The nobility addition was deleted in March 1900 from all birth registers in Ruppichteroth and Düsseldorf, where he was married and his children were born. The family became middle class. The other descendants of Josef Freiherrn von Martial bear their name - from Martial - to this day.

Carl (von) Martial committed suicide in April 1900.
