The Martin Islands ( French Îles Martin ) are a group of small islands and cliff rocks with an extension of over 8 km in the archipelago of the Biscoe Islands off the Graham coast of Graham Land on the Antarctic Peninsula . In the Grandidier Canal they are 8 km east of the northern part of the Renaud Island and 1.5 km west of the Vieugué Island .
Participants in the Fourth French Antarctic Expedition (1903–1905) under the direction of polar explorer Jean-Baptiste Charcot named a group of islands north of a supposed Pitt Island after Juan Alejandro Martín (1865–1963), the Argentine Minister of the Navy from 1904 to 1906. Explorations from the Luft later revealed that the alleged Pitt Island is actually a whole group of islands, the Pitt Islands . This includes all islands north of Renaud Island. In order to preserve the name of the Fourth French Antarctic Expedition, the name was transferred to the island group described here.
