The Martin-Luther-King-Park is a green area in the city of Frankfurt am Main in the German state of Hesse . The park, which was laid out from 1969 to 1971, is named after the American civil rights activist and Nobel Prize winner Martin Luther King, who was murdered in 1968 . The green area is north of the Frankfurt-Nordweststadt settlement in the Niederursel district .

History and design of the park

Beginning in 1969, the Martin Luther King Park was laid out by US soldiers stationed in Frankfurt. According to a report in the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung from 2004, this happened because the city lacked the financial means to set up the park. It was also the GIs who dedicated the park to the civil rights activist who had been murdered the year before. In 2001 a memorial plaque for Martin Luther King was placed in the park.

In 1971 an approximately 4,800 m² large, natural pond was created in the clay pit of a brickworks formerly located there . The still water, which is between 50 and 80 cm shallow, is fed by groundwater . A reed belt and willow trees ( Salix ) stand on its bank . Other facilities in the park include an adventure playground , streetball and basketball field, football field, sunbathing lawn, walking paths and a dog meadow.

An open-air festival has been held every two years in the Martin Luther King Park since 1996 , organized by the Netzwerk Nordweststadt e. V. and the Diakonie Frankfurt is organized.
