The Martin Luther Church in Bad Neuenahr , a town in the Ahrweiler district ( Rhineland-Palatinate ), is a place of worship of the Evangelical Church in the Rhineland . The church is a protected cultural monument .

history

In the middle of the 19th century there were about 30 Protestant Christians in the district town of Ahrweiler who belonged to the Protestant community of Remagen. The pastor came from Remagen to hold the service in the hall of the Houverath inn in Ahrweiler. The Protestant Christians in the up-and-coming spa town of Neuenahr also had to go to church in Ahrweiler. The construction of the Martin Luther Church, which was completed in 1872, was financed through donations from the spa guests, through a grant from the Gustav Adolf Works , through collections in other Rhenish communities and in Holland, as well as through a gift of 10,000 thalers to Sr. Majesty. A year later, the parish seat was moved to Neuenahr and the prayer room in Niederhutstrasse was sold. It was not until 1878 that the 25-year period as a vicariate came to an end with the establishment of the Evangelical Church in Bad Neuenahr. The first pastor of the community was Gustav Adolf Pliester; a plaque on the outside commemorates the builder of the church .

architecture

From the neo-Gothic church built in 1872 , after a renovation in 1958 by the Trier architect Heinrich Otto Vogel, only the bell tower in the east, the rose window above the main portal and the two side windows have been preserved in their original form . The old part was built from local quarry stone and the new parts from concrete, which was clad with quarry stone. The extension of the east aisle was provided with ribbed glass windows.

The interior was completely redesigned during the renovation. The wooden vault was replaced by a flat concrete ceiling. At the front, behind the altar , a mosaic was attached that depicts the crucified. It is a work by the artist Eugen Keller from Höhr-Grenzhausen . The organ installed in 1978 comes from the organ building company Ott in Göttingen .
