Martin Amelung

Martin Amelung (born August 20, 1937 in Frankfurt am Main , † April 20, 2006 in Munich ) was a German criminal defense attorney .

Life

Amelung was born as the fourth son of Walther Amelung and his wife Else and lived in his parents' private clinic in Königstein im Taunus until he graduated from high school . After studying law for four semesters in Tübingen, Amelung moved to Munich in 1959, where he passed the legal traineeship in 1962 and the assessor's examination in 1966, before taking up the legal profession.

As a trainee lawyer, Amelung developed a particular interest in criminal defense while working with lawyer Heinz Pelka , who became known in the Brühne / Ferbach trial and who supported Amelung in these proceedings. Amelung himself became known nationwide in 1972 through the defense of Dimitri Todorov and in 1979/1980 as the defender of the Oetker kidnapper Dieter Zlof alongside the lawyers Rolf Bossi and Steffen Ufer . As a result, Amelung u. a. the former Mayor of Munich Erich Kiesl , the spy Gabriele Gastand defended in the heart valve scandal and in the bribe scandal surrounding the construction of the Allianz Arena .

In addition to his work as a lawyer, Amelung was a founding member of the executive committee of the Criminal Law Working Group in the German Lawyers' Association ; he was a member of it for 22 years until his death. In the Munich Bar Association Amelung u. a. Member of a specialist examination committee ( specialist lawyer for criminal law ).

In its obituary, the Criminal Law Working Group praised Amelung as "one of the great criminal defense personalities in this country".
