Martin Benka
Martin Benka (born September 21, 1888 in Kostolište ; † June 28, 1971 in Malacky ) was a Slovakian expressionist artist .
Benka is considered to be one of the founders of modern Slovak painting. He received his artistic training in Hodonín and Prague , where he worked as a freelance artist from 1913 to 1939. In 1939 he returned to Slovakia and ran an art school in Martin . Benka was a member of the Slovak National Council.
Benka worked as a painter, graphic artist and illustrator. He also made instrument studies and numerous postage stamp designs. His former home in Martin now houses the Martin Benka Museum.
