Martin D-28

The Martin D-28 is a guitar model from CF Martin & Co. and is a symbol of today's western guitar . It has been built since 1931 and is now made from East Indian rosewood, Sitka spruce, mahogany and ebony.

history

The D in the model name classifies the design of the guitars as a dreadnought. These guitars are a characteristic feature of CF Martin & Co. and date back to 1916. These are western guitars with a larger body, the name of which is based on a class of battleships of the same name , which at the time was considered particularly powerful and modern . The symbol indicating the design is followed by a number which at the time indicated the price of the guitar in US dollars ; the introductory price of the Martin D-28 was $ 28. The Martin D-28 was first built in 1931 and is still available today. It was so popular in the 1950s that due to the high demand, customers had to wait up to two years for delivery.

As with other dreadnought guitars, the guitar neck goes over to the body at the 14th fret . Initially, Brazilian Rio rosewood was used to build the back and sides ; due to its endangerment, however, East Indian rosewood was later used . In order to put a stop to whaling , nowadays mainly satin instead of whalebone is used for decoration . The Martin D-28 is built from extremely high-quality tonewood . The top is made of solid Sitka spruce , back and sides are made of East Indian rosewood, the neck is made of solid mahogany and the fingerboard and bridge are made of solid ebony. The ceiling is stabilized by X-bracing, i.e. strips glued onto the inside of the ceiling in a cross shape.

Models

In several decades of production, a total of five different variations of the Martin D-28 were created. In addition to the original D-28, there are the HD-28, D-28E, D-28S and D12-28. The designation "HD-28" stands for the use of a herringbone pattern to frame the ceiling. This model also differs from the D-28 in that, although the bracing form of the X-bracing was retained, the strips were made thinner in places in order to achieve more overtones ( scalloped X-bracing ). The D-28E has two pickups near the bridge and at the end of the fingerboard; Although it was classified as a failure, it gained collector value in particular because Kurt Cobain played it at the MTV Unplugged concert in New York , the recording of which was published posthumously. The D-28S is also strung with steel strings, but has a body that is reminiscent of a concert guitar . The D12-28 has twelve instead of six strings, but is otherwise identical to the D-28.
