Martin Durrell

Martin Durrell (born November 6, 1943 ) is a British linguist and professor emeritus , who is known for his research on the German language .

biography

Martin Durrell graduated with a BA in Modern and Medieval Languages ​​from Jesus College , Cambridge University , before earning a Diploma in General Linguistics from the University of Manchester . He then did his doctorate at the University of Marburg as Dr. phil.

From 1967 to 1986 Durrell worked as a lecturer at the University of Manchester and in 1983/84 was a visiting professor at the University of Alberta . From 1986 to 1990 he spent four years as a professor of German at Royal Holloway and Bedford College of the University of London . In 1990 Durrell was appointed to the Henry Simon Chair in German at the University of Manchester until he retired in 2008 .

From 1993 to 2007 Durrell was President of the Forum for Germanic Language Studies, and from 1993 to 2008 Honorary Treasurer of the Philological Society , the oldest scholarly society in Great Britain. From 1995 to 2004 he was a member of the International Association for German Studies (IVG) and its vice-president from 2004 to 2005. From 1998 to 2008 he was a member of the International Scientific Council of the Institute for the German Language (IDS) .

Durrell's main areas of work are German sociolinguistics and dialectology ; contemporary German grammar and use of language; as well as historical phonology and morphology of the Germanic languages . Durrell is best known for his work on Hammer's German Grammar and Usage , which is considered the leading English-language reference work for German grammar and is currently (2018) in its sixth edition.

In 2002 he was awarded the Federal Cross of Merit on Ribbon for his services to German-British understanding. On March 11th, 2020 he was awarded the “Prize of the IDS Director for Lifetime Achievement in International German Linguistics”.
