Martin Gümbel
Martin Gümbel (born January 16, 1923 in Stuttgart , † September 20, 1986 in Aalen ) was a German composer and music teacher .
Life
After studying composition and flute at the State University for Music and Performing Arts in Stuttgart , Martin Gümbel worked as a composer, flutist and flute teacher from 1950. He was strongly influenced by the international summer courses for new music, which take place every year in Darmstadt. There seemed Messiaen , Fortner , Varèse and the philosopher Adorno . But the New Vienna School - Schönberg , Webern , Berg - and the encounter with Nono , Boulez and Stockhausen also shaped his compositional work. In 1960 he returned to the Stuttgart University of Music as a lecturer and was appointed professor of music theory and composition there in 1971. In 1978 he was elected Vice Rector and in 1980 Rector of the university. During this time he also campaigned for the establishment of a course in "Jazz and Popular Music", which was then implemented by his successor.
Martin Gümbel was married to the pianist Luise Gümbel.
