Martin Gabriel

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Martin Gabriel (full name Martin Joseph Gabriel Sr .; * 1876 in New Orleans , † November 25, 1932 ibid) was an American jazz musician and band leader in New Orleans.

Martin Gabriel came from a typical New Orleans musical dynasty ; his father, the bassist Narcisse Gabriel, was an objection from Santo Domingo in 1856 . He played the cornet and the accordion himself . From 1895 he led various dance and marching bands , which also served as a training center for jazz musicians of the next generation such as Johnny St. Cyr . He also directed the The National Orchestra , an advanced Jazz - Ensemble . The ensemble, to which Freddie Keppard also belonged, played for almost two decades from 1913 and broke up with the death of Martin Gabriel. Johnny St. Cyr was also part of the band at times. His sons, the double bass player Percy Gabriel (1915-1993), the clarinetist and drummer Martin Manuel Gabriel (Martin Gabriel Jr.) and the pianist and banjo player Clarence Gabriel (1905 to around 1982), were also jazz musicians and played in one in New Orleans own band. Percy and Martin later moved to Detroit, where they also had a New Orleans style band. Some of their sons were also jazz musicians, such as the clarinetist and saxophonist in the Preservation Hall Orchestra Charlie Gabriel (* 1932), the son of Martin Manuel Gabriel. The family also includes saxophonist Clarence Ford , who was a student of Martin Gabriel Jr. and who played with Fats Dominoes in the 1950s and 1960s . His grandson Thaddeus Ford Jr. is a jazz trumpeter.
