Martin M. Goldsmith (born November 6, 1913 in New York City , New York , † May 24, 1994 in Sherman Oaks , California ) was an American screenwriter and writer who was nominated for an Oscar in 1952.

Career

Goldsmith was born and raised in New York in 1913. In 1939 he published the novel Detour , which was filmed under the same title in the USA in 1945, for which Goldsmith also wrote the screenplay. In Germany, the title appeared under the name diversion and was not a financial success despite positive reviews. Today the film is considered a classic of film noir and was included in Time 's list of the 100 best films of all time in 2005. In addition, Time described the film with the quote: "Film noir? Yeah, baby. No film is noirer." The material from the novel Detour has already been taken up several times in other films as well as in Detour from 1992, which is considered a remake.

After further scriptwriting for other films, Goldsmith and Jack Leonard received an Oscar nomination in the category Best Original Story for his work on the film A Hair's Width at the 1953 Academy Awards . A remake of the film was released in 1990 under the title Narrow Margin - 12 hours of fear with Gene Hackman and Anne Archer in the lead roles.

In May 1994, Martin Goldsmith died in Sherman Oaks, California at the age of 80.
