Martin Goller

Martin Goller OSB (born February 20, 1764 in Laion as Josef Matthias Goller ; † January 13, 1836 in Innsbruck ) was an Austrian Benedictine priest , composer and teacher of composition.

Life

Goller came from a musical family, both father Daniel and mother Ursula appeared as organists . He received his first music lessons from his father and showed such talent that he was able to substitute him as an organist from an early age. At the age of 10 he came to the Neustift monastery , later he moved to the women's monastery in Hall in Tirol as a chapel boy . In 1780 he joined the Benedictine order in St. Georgenberg-Fiecht . Sponsored by the renowned organist Father Magnus Dagn , Goller developed into the monastery’s leading musician. In 1788 he was ordained a priest in Brixen . After stints in the Säben monastery and in Sterzing , he got a job as a music teacher at the Innsbruck high school in 1812, and in 1816 also at the local lyceum.

Goller did a great job as one of the founding fathers of the Innsbruck Music Association (1818), at whose school he was appointed senior music teacher for figured bass and composition. His most famous students were Johann Rufinatscha , Matthäus Nagiller and Josef Netzer .

Works

Goller was not only a sought-after teacher of composition, but also a well-known composer, whose works also received the attention of Michael Haydn . Although he appeared mainly as a composer for church music (Goller wrote over 60 masses and requies), he also composed secular works such as two operas and a clarinet concerto .
