Martin Hesse (born July 26, 1911 in Gaienhofen , † October 14, 1968 in Bern ) was a Swiss photographer .

Life

Martin Hesse was born in Gaienhofen in 1911 as the third son of Hermann Hesse and his first wife, the Basel photographer Maria Bernoulli (1868–1963). He grew up in Bern from 1912, after his parents separated in 1919, partly in a foster family and partly with his mother in Ascona . The contact with the famous father was regular despite the physical distance: They wrote letters, they visited each other. Over time, numerous portraits were taken that show the father in different moods, ages and environments.

After completing an architecture apprenticeship in Thun and briefly studying at the Bauhaus Dessau , Martin Hesse moved back to Bern and made photography his profession. On behalf of the Canton of Bern , he photographed the Bernese art monuments.

Martin Hesse married the librarian Isabelle von Wurstemberger (1906–1990). The daughter Sibylle emerged from the connection in 1945. Hesse committed in 1968 at the age of 57 years after a severe depression suicide .
