The Crabtree catalyst is a complex compound with monovalent iridium as the central ion. The complex is named after Robert H. Crabtree , who first published it in 1979.

The Crabtree catalyst is a hydrogenation catalyst . Its advantages over the rhodium- based Wilkinson catalyst are its high activity and its ability to hydrogenate triple or quadruple substituted alkenes .

In the complex, iridium has a d 8 configuration and consequently assumes a square-planar geometry.
