Martin Martini (* 1565 / 66 in Zignau , community Trun , † before 6. May 1610 in Piedmont Tassarolo ) was a Swiss engraver .

Life

Martin (Martinus) Martini was a talented engraver, goldsmith, glass painter and universal artist of the classical era, whose cityscapes, portraits, devotional pictures and book illustrations were very much appreciated by customers. His difficulties with noble and guild employers as well as his misconduct based on improving his poor living conditions are also known. After completing his apprenticeship in Chur in 1591, he had to leave the Wegerich mint because of counterfeiting and came to Lucerne via Zurich , where, among other things, he made an engraving of the city of Lucerne with an integrated small self-portrait and the ruling aristocratic families there. In 1601 he was expelled from Lucerne for private deals. He moved to Bünden, then to Uri and then worked in Freiburg im Üechtland until 1609 , where he also engraved the cityscape in copper in 1606. Together with his contemporary Gregorius Sickinger , Martini reformed the art of vedute in the copperplate gravure technique. Both artists created real cityscapes (so-called "Abkonterfacturen"), which formed the basis for a renewal of cartography and surveying. Martini also devoted himself to the printing of religious images of saints and the depiction of the coats of arms of the urban elites. At the end of 1609 he took up the post of mint master at the court of Count Agostino Spinola in Tassarolo. Martini performed extraordinary "perspective drawings" in geometry and cartography. His goldsmith's work, engravings and glass paintings are still little known.
