Martin McNamara (theologian)

Martin J. McNamara (* 1930 ) is an Irish Catholic theologian and Bible translator. He taught at St. Patrick's Papal College in Maynooth , County Kildare , Ireland, which is now part of the state Maynooth University .

Martin McNamara received his doctorate in 1966 at the Vatican Biblical Institute in Rome on parallels between the Palestinian Targum Neophyti and the New Testament. He later published a complete Aramaic- English Bible edition based on this Targum. His work on Bible translation promoted ecumenism . He published fundamental work on Biblical Apocrypha in the Church of Ireland.

He is one of the founders of the Irish Biblical Association and an advocate of the study of the Scriptures by lay people as an indispensable foundation of the Catholic Christian faith.
