Martin Rose

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Martin Rose (born September 30, 1696 in Volkstedt , † January 29, 1758 in Apolda ) was a German bell founder . He was a younger brother of Apolda's first bell founder, Johann Christoph Rose , and thus laid the foundation stone for the tradition of bell foundries in Apolda .

life and work

Martin Rose was the second youngest son of Johann Rose (1654-1716), bell founder in Volkstedt , and his wife Barbara Rose; the couple had seven children.

After the father's death, the youngest son Johann Wolfgang Rose (1699–1750) continued the bell foundry in Volkstedt. The common grandfather Christoph Rose (1630–1675) founded the family's own bell foundry in Volkstedt.

From when and how long Martin Rose worked in the bell foundry of his brother Johann Christoph Rose in Apolda is not known. After his death in 1749, Martin Rose continued the bell foundry. Since both brothers were childless, Johann Georg Ulrich junior, eldest son of the bell founder Johann Georg Ulrich senior from Laucha, took over the company.

Create

In the bell literature around 1900, 43 places are specified in which bells from Johann Christoph Rose's creative period from 1712 to 1748 are said to have been. He died in 1749 - it is possible that some of the bells of the last few years can already be attributed to Martin Rose without his name being mentioned.

There were Martin Rose bells in at least seven places. The only one that has survived from him to this day is the bell in Söllnitz from 1755.

The first foundry site in Apolda quickly became too small. As early as 1722, the older brother moved to the site of what is now Glockengießereistrasse 2, which was outside the suburb at the time.

With their work, Johann Christoph Rose and Martin Rose laid the foundation for the almost three centuries-old tradition of the bell foundry in Apolda .

Varia

In his research up until 2018, Ernst Fauer found out that Martin Rose is listed several times as a member of the military in the military files of the Duchy of Saxony-Weimar in the Weimar State Archives on Beethovenplatz - apparently, to use today's formulation, he was a long-time professional soldier. Perhaps that was his career before he moved to his oldest brother in Apolda and worked in his bell foundry.
