Johann Christoph Rose (born September 9, 1686 in Volkstedt , † September 2, 1749 in Apolda ) was a German bell founder . He was Apolda's first bell founder and thus laid the foundation for the tradition of bell foundries in Apolda .

life and work

Johann Christoph Rose was the eldest son of Johann Rose (1654–1716), bell founder in Volkstedt , and his wife Barbara Rose; the couple had seven children.

After the father's death, the youngest son Johann Wolfgang Rose (1699–1750) continued the bell foundry in Volkstedt. The common grandfather Christoph Rose (1630–1675) founded the family's own bell foundry in Volkstedt.

After the death of Johann Christoph Rose, his brother Martin Rose (1696–1758) continued the bell foundry. Since both brothers were childless, Johann Georg Ulrich junior, eldest son of the bell founder Johann Georg Ulrich senior from Laucha, took over the company.

Create

In the bell literature around 1900, 43 places are specified in which bells from Johann Christoph Rose's creative period from 1712 to 1748 are said to have been.

Rose bells are preserved in Wickerstedt (1719), Kleinlöbichau (1723), Neustedt and Rödigen (1729), Gebstedt (1731), Hermstedt (1742), Gernewitz (1747) and Zottelstedt (1720). The bell from 1742 in the Umpferstedt church is a facsimile cast by the Schilling family of bell foundries from 1964.

Rose did not exclusively manufacture bells - certainly due to fluctuating order books. It is said that he created twelve sets of lead weights for butchers.

The first foundry site in Apolda quickly became too small. In 1722, Rose moved to what is now Glockengießereistrasse 2, which was outside the suburb at the time.

With their work, Johann Christoph Rose and Martin Rose laid the foundation for the almost three centuries-old tradition of the bell foundry in Apolda .

Honor

As a reminder of and in honor of Johann Christoph Rose and his services, there has been Rosestrasse in Apolda since May 1992 .
