Life

Salm studied ancient American studies , ethnology and economics in Bonn and Berlin. After completing his doctorate, he joined the German Caritas Association (DCV) as a Latin American representative in 1981 and from 1992 headed the worldwide emergency and disaster relief of the welfare association. In 1997 he took over the management of the aid organization Caritas international (Ci) and was a member of the executive board of the DCV until 2005.

In 2006 he was elected a member of the board of the “Remembrance, Responsibility and Future” foundation. In July 2007 he succeeded Michael Jansen as chairman of the board. He ran the foundation together with board member Günter Saathoff . The foundation “Remembrance, Responsibility and Future” was established by law in 2000 by the German Bundestag . Half of the foundation's funds were raised by the federal government and half by the German Business Foundation Initiative. The purpose of the foundation was to organize a worldwide disbursement program in favor of victims of National Socialist injustice, especially Nazi slave laborers. In addition to the disbursement program, a support program was set up on the basis of the investment income from a permanently remaining foundation capital (share capital for this purpose in 2000: 700 million DM ). Under the leadership of Salm, the foundation's work was repositioned after the end of the disbursement program: In memory of the victims of National Socialism, the foundation takes responsibility for human rights and international understanding and continues to support survivors.
