Martin Schickhard the Elder (* 1579 in Siegen , † 1636 in Deventer ) was a German law professor. He worked at the High School in Herborn , where he was temporarily also principal, and at the Illustrious School in Deventer.

Life

Martin Schickhard was the middle son of Henrich Schickhartt . He learned first at the Latin school, then at the pedagogy in Siegen. From 1597 he studied law, first at the high school in Herborn and from 1598 in Heidelberg , where he acquired a doctorate in both rights (i.e., canonical and Roman law) on June 10, 1606. From July 15 of the same year he was teaching at the Johanea in Herborn. In 1606, in a dispute with Count Johann VII of Nassau-Siegen , he tried in vain to achieve that the high school, which had been relocated to Siegen because of the plague, was left there permanently. In 1614, 1620 and 1623 he was rector of this university.

Martin Schickhard had been in correspondence with Wilhelm Schickard since 1624 . In March 1626 he reported on his plans to open a language school in the Gottesgrund monastery (diocese of Magdeburg). In the summer of 1626 Siegen was taken again by the Catholic League and Martin Schickhard looked for another job - for fear "that the Jesuits might attract the [Calvinist] University of Herborn". On the recommendation of the famous Herborn professor Johann Heinrich Alsted , he got a position as a law professor in the newly founded Illustre School in Deventer, the Netherlands. In the summer of 1629 he went to Deventer, where he worked for the remaining years until his relatively early death at the age of 57.

Martin Schickhard probably had no offspring.
