Heinrich Martin Schwarz was born on October 18, 1885 as the son of the District Court Secretary Albrecht Schwarz in Frankfurt am Main. He attended the Kaiser-Friedrichs-Gymnasium in his hometown from Easter 1895 to Easter 1905 . He then studied architecture at the TH Darmstadt . He completed his studies in 1909 with a degree in engineering. The diploma thesis was written by Georg Wickop . After one year of military service, Schwarz settled in Arnstadt as a freelance architect in 1911. He lived at Schlossplatz No. 1, in the same house as the city planner Anton Acker. His first building was the synagogue in Arnstadt , which he moved into in autumn 1913. By 1938, he built numerous buildings in Arnstadt that still shape the cityscape today, initially with historical style references, at times in the clear design language of the Bauhaus architects. His bigger order was the Arnstadt dairy farm , which was built in 1928/29. Schwarz wanted to "create a simple, dignified building that serves the purpose and also expresses this architecturally."

He was also a publicly employed expert at the Central Thuringian Chamber of Commerce and Industry Weimar, a member of the Association of German Architects and a member of the Museum Society and the administrative committee of the Museum Foundation.

In 1938 Schwarz moved to Erfurt and also worked there as a freelance architect, where he died in 1945.
