Martin Stopford (* 1947 in Bolton ) is a British economist and managing director of the maritime services company Clarksons .

Education and professional career

Stopford completed his schooling in Shrewsbury and Staffordshire and later studied politics, philosophy and economics in Oxford and London. After completing his studies, he received a doctorate in economics in 1979 . He worked as early as the early 1970s on the publication of maritime studies and from 1977 for the state shipbuilding company British Shipbuilders Corporation . After a two-year stint at Chase Manhattan Bank , Stopford joined Clarkson Research in 1990 and moved up to its board of directors in 2004.

Martin Stopford teaches as a regular lecturer and course leader at the Cambridge Academy of Transport and as a visiting professor at Cass Business School , Dalian Maritime University , Copenhagen Business School and Newcastle University .

In addition to numerous publications and lectures, Stopford is best known for the publication of the work Maritime Economics . The book, which has been published in three editions since 1988, is one of the standard works of the maritime economy. In 2005, Stopford was awarded the Chojeong Book Prize for Maritime Economics . The Southampton Solent University awarded Stopford 2009 an honorary doctorate and the journal Lloyd's List honored him in 2010 with an award for his life's work. In 2015, Stopford received the Onassis Prize .

Private

Martin Stopford has two children, Ben and Elizabeth. He runs organic farming on his farm in the Staffordshire Moorlands.
