Martin Thust

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Martin Thust (born January 13, 1892 in Breslau , † December 11, 1969 in Nagold ) was a German pastor , mathematician , philosopher and theologian .

Live and act

Martin Thust was a pastor in Holzgerlingen from 1947 to 1960 . He came from a rich family of manufacturers who financed three complete courses for him: mathematics in Göttingen, philosophy in Freiburg and theology in Tübingen and Breslau.

From 1924 to 1931 he wrote an extensive book on Søren Kierkegaard , which was published in 1931. He obtained his doctorate in Breslau in 1930 and qualified as a professor of systematic theology there in 1933. He was to take over the chair for systemic theology in the summer semester of 1933. But because he belonged to the Confessing Church and not to the German Christians who supported the National Socialists , he was suspended for political reasons and transferred to another sentence.

He later took on various pastoral services. From 1935 to 1946 he was pastor of the parish of Langenau in the Silesian district of Löwenberg . From there he was expelled by the Polish occupation forces and placed in a resettlement camp. He then worked for a short time as a pastor in a district of Leipzig . After the war, like countless other Germans, he fled to the West.

A career at the theological faculty in Tübingen was out of the question, since he belonged to the Moravian Brethren , which was not suffered in Tübingen. He applied to be a pastor at the Württemberg regional church and came to Holzgerlingen in 1947 after much bureaucratic hiccups.

On July 1, 1947, Pastor Dr. Martin Thust started his parish in Holzgerlingen. He stayed there until he retired in the summer of 1960. Since the transition to his successor was not seamless, he continued to administer the pastor's post until Pastor Theodor Kühnle arrived with his family. In September 1960 he moved to Nagold , where he passed his retirement. He died on December 11, 1969 and was buried in the Tübingen mountain cemetery.

Appreciation

Pastor Thust was considered a gifted pastor and brilliant preacher. However, he was not so gifted at dealing with young people. Few knew about his extensive education and his academic license to teach. Many felt his sermons at that time as "too high". Sometimes his sermons are said to have expanded beyond the audience into theological treatises. On the other hand, he also managed to convey what he was about with simple gestures. It will be remembered in the future that he usually worked on his sermons on Saturday walks for hours and then recited them from his head on Sunday in the pulpit. The local council has decided to name the connection route from Turmstrasse to the new Hülben development area Pfarrer-Martin-Thust-Weg.
