Martin Vetterli.

Martin Vetterli (born October 4, 1957 ) is a Swiss professor of computer science and communication . He is the current President of the École polytechnique fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL) in Lausanne .

Career

Vetterli grew up in the canton of Neuchâtel . After studying engineering at ETH Zurich and Stanford University, Martin Vetterli received his doctorate from the École polytechnique fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL). After his doctorate, various professorships followed at Columbia University in New York and at the University of California at Berkeley .

In 1995 he returned to the École polytechnique fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL).

From 2004 to 2011 he was vice-president of the École polytechnique fédérale de Lausanne and from 2011 to 2012 he was dean of the computer science faculty.

From 2013 to 2016 he chaired the Research Council of the Swiss National Science Foundation .

In 2015 he was elected to the United States National Academy of Engineering for his work .

research

Martin Vetterli teaches and researches in the field of digital signal processing , where he is known for his wavelet work . These find great applications in the areas of image compression and audio data compression .

Martin Vetterli has published over 150 research articles and co-founded numerous patents and start-ups.

He is co-author of the book Wavelets and Subband Coding (Prentice-Hall, 1995).

In 2008 he published the freely accessible book Signal Processing for Communications with Paolo Prandoni.

Another book on the subject, Foundations of Signal Processing , was also freely available in 2014.

With Paolo Prandoni, Martin Vetterli also published the first Massive Open Online Course on Digital Signal Processing , which is one of the first Massive Open Online Course courses in continental Europe.
