Martinus Nijhoff

Martinus Nijhoff (born December 26, 1826 in Arnhem , † September 24, 1894 in The Hague ) was a Dutch bookseller and publisher .

Life

Martinus Nijhoff was the son of the publisher, archivist and historian Isaac Anne Nijhoff (1795–1863). After finishing school, he trained as a bookseller, and first got into his father's publishing business. In 1853 he founded his own publishing house named after him in The Hague, which also included a bookstore and a second-hand bookshop .

The Martinus Nijhoff publishing house developed into one of the best-known international book publishers. Nowadays the publishing house "Martinus Nijhoff Publishers" is an imprint of the publishing house Brill based in Leiden .

Martinus Nijhoff is the grandfather of the Dutch writer of the same name Martinus Nijhoff (1894–1953).
