Edwin Oliver James (born March 30, 1888 in London ; † July 6, 1972 ) was a British anthropologist with a focus on the history of religion and comparative religious studies .

Life

James studied at Exeter College in Oxford and at University College London , here with the archaeologist and Egyptologist William Matthew Flinders Petrie . He first embarked on a theological career. Independently of this, he continued his religious-historical and anthropological studies. In 1928 he received his first teaching position at the University of Cambridge . His academic career took him to the University of Leeds , where he was professor of history and the philosophy of religion . He was a lecturer at the University of Amsterdam and Wilde Lecturer at the University of Oxford . In 1955 he retired from the University of London and then devoted himself exclusively to his research.

The basis for his scientific work were also his extensive research trips to the areas of early and prehistoric importance of the Dordogne , the Ariège , the Pyrenees , Brittany and Ireland . In prehistoric Spain , on the Aegean Islands and in the area of ​​the eastern Mediterranean he collected material for his publications on these trips.
