Hodaka Maruyama ( Japanese 丸山 穂 高 , Maruyama Hodaka ; born January 10, 1984 in Osaka Prefecture ) is a Japanese politician and member of the House of Representatives ( lower house of the National Parliament ) for the 19th constituency of Osaka. He was a member of the Nippon Ishin no Kai before being expelled from the party in May 2019 after a call for war. Since July 2019 he has been a member of the NHK kara kokumin o mamoru tō ("party that protects citizens from the NHK ").

Maruyama, a graduate of Tokyo University's Economics Faculty , became a METI civil servant after graduating in 2006 . In 2009 he left the ministry and visited the Matsushita Seikei Juku , the academy for executives in politics and business , founded by the Matsushita Denki Group (now Panasonic ). He then turned to active politics and ran for the then (first) Nippon Ishin no Kai in the 2012 House of Representatives election in the 19th constituency in the very south of his home prefecture Osaka. There he prevailed against Tomu Tanigawa ( LDP ) and the democratic incumbent Takashi Nagayasu . He was re-elected in the 2014 elections for Ishin no Tō and 2017 for the (second) Ishin no Kai.

In May 2019, Maruyama visited the controversial “Northern Territories” / South Kuril Islands , which from the Japanese government's point of view are part of the Hokkaidō (“Northern Sea Prefecture”), but de facto and from the Russian government point of view, part of the Kuril Islands , which were ceded to the Soviet Union after the Second World War, in a visa-free exchange program and whose status still stands in the way of a peace treaty between the two countries. While under the influence of alcohol, at a meeting with displaced persons, he declared that war with Russia was the only way to regain the islands. In the ensuing outcry from the national and international public, the party responded to his resignation with exclusion. He has rejected calls from politicians across the political spectrum (including his former party) to resign from his parliamentary seat.
