Marvin Wayne Meyer

Marvin Wayne Meyer (born April 16, 1948 in Grand Rapids , † August 16, 2012 ) was an American coptologist .

Life

He was Griset Professor of Bible and Christian Studies at Chapman University and Director of the Albert Schweitzer Institute. He was also the director of the Coptic Magical Texts Project of the Institute of Antiquity and Christianity.

He was best known for his translations of the texts of documents related to the ancient mystery religions, early Christian magic, and Gnostic texts. The most notable were the Gospels of Thomas and the Gospels of Jude , the former of which is contained in the Nag Hammadi Library. Meyer has published a collection of English translations of the Nag Hammadi texts for the HarperOne imprint, the last revised edition of which was published in 2007 as the Nag Hammadi script. He was considered an authority on Gnosticism and has worked on many books on the subject. Meyer died of melanoma on August 16, 2012 .
