marxism today (prologue) ( German Marxismus heute ( prolog ) ) is a German short film by Phil Collins from 2010 . In Germany, the film premiered on May 8, 2011 at the International Short Film Festival in Oberhausen .
action
The film deals with the reappraisal of the lived Marxism in the German Democratic Republic . In interview scenes, the director tries to create connections between the present and the past. How was it and how was it presented? In his film, Collins works out a difference between the images of GDR television and active people in the GDR. He tries to fathom different perspectives and compare them to one another and thus offer an unbiased view of the public and private GDR.
Reviews
“Biographies with violent breaks, triggered by history. A state and a 'state body' disappear and with them a whole superstructure of ideas and ways of thinking. Those affected - people who taught civics or Marxism-Leninism in the GDR - have to invent a new life, but what happens to the ideological and perhaps also idealistic remnants, where do they find their place? Apart from ostalgia or denunciation, Phil Collins creates an intense portrait of a time in his visually impressive montage of interviews and archive material and goes beyond a conventional concept of documentary realism.
