Mary Anne a'becket (also Mrs. GA A'Beckett and Mrs. Gilbert A'Beckett born when Florence Mary Anne Glossop ; * 1817 in London , † 11. December 1863 in London) was an English composer .

Life

Mary Anne A'Becket was the eldest daughter of the theater director Joseph Glossops, a friend of George IV. In the 1820s, he had been the impressario at La Scala in Milan. Her mother was Glossop's first wife, the singer Elisabeth Fearon (Féron). On January 21, 1835, she married Gilbert Abbott A'Beckett (1811-1856), a magistrate , humorous writer, playwright and journalist. They had four children together, the two sons Gilbert Arthur A'Beckett (1837-1891) and the writer Arthur William A'Beckett as well as two daughters.

Stage works

  • Agnes Sorrel . An Operatic Farce , also Grand Opéra . Libretto: Gilbert Abbott A'Beckett. The work is based on the story of Agnès Sorel . First performance: December 16, 1835 at St James's Theater, London. It was the first production performed at John Braham's St James's Theater. 1836 published by Mori & Levenu in London.
  • Wanted a brigand, or, A visit from Fra-Diavolo,; Musical Burletta, incidental music for the play of the same name by her husband Gilbert Abbott A'Beckett. First performed at St. James Thetare in December 1837.
  • Little Red Riding Hood, Fairy Opera. The work premiered at the Surrey Gardens Theater in London on August 8, 1842. In February 1842 the work was on the program in the Princess's Theater.
  • The Young Pretender , incidental music for the work of the same name by Mark Lemon , 1846. Three songs of the opera were published.

She composed two waltzes for piano.
