Mary Thurman (born April 27, 1895 in Richfield , Utah as Mary Christiansen , † December 22, 1925 in New York City ) was an American actress of the silent film era .

Life

Mary Christiansen was born to Danish immigrants. She had six siblings and grew up in the denomination of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints . Christiansen studied at the University of Utah and then worked as a teacher before starting an acting career in 1915. In the same year she married Victor E. Thurman. Although the marriage was divorced in 1919, they kept his last name as a stage name.

At the beginning of her career, Mary Thurman belonged to the Sennett Bathing Beauties dance group founded by Mack Sennett , who always appeared in swimwear and could be seen together in several films. In the following years she managed an independent career with roles in almost 60 film productions, including many for Pathé . In 1923 she played the role of Florianne in the melodrama Zaza, the girl from the variety theater at Gloria Swanson's side .

During the filming of Down Upon The Suwanee River, Mary Thurman fell ill with severe pneumonia in 1924. She stayed in the hospital for over a year and was unable to recover from her illness. Thurman died on December 22, 1925 at the age of 30 in New York's Flower Hospital. She was buried in the Richfield City Cemetery in her hometown.
