life and work

Maryla Wolska was born on March 13, 1873 in Lwów. She studied painting in Munich and Paris before devoting herself entirely to poetry . She held a literary salon in her home in Lwów .

Her poetry shows characteristics typical of the fin de siècle such as pessimism and premonition of death. Wolska was also a patriotic poet. This is how she treated the composer and politician Ignacy Jan Paderewski in one of her poems . The work was written on the occasion of Paderewski's return to Poland in January 1899 and was written by her and a lesser known poet, Marian Gawalewicz . One of the stanzas written by Wolska, in which she conjured up the renewed independence of Poland with a reference to the sleeping princess, was:

“Pożar nad czołem, aw oczach mgła
Mistyczne cienie kładła.
Przed nim elegia Smutna szła
I tęsknych mar widziadła ...
Za nim się snuł marzący Tlum,
Melodia wniebowzięty,
I szedł za czarem jego dum
Przez dźwięcznych fal odmęty ...
I szedł za czarem jego słów,
Zaklętych w tony rzewne
I wołał w głos : 'O, graj! O, mów! '
I śpiącą wskrześ królewnę! '”

"The fire above his forehead and the mist in his eyes
Spread out the mystic shadows.
Before him a sorrowful elegy walked
And phantoms of lonesome spirits ...
Behind him wandered a dreamy crowd
Transfixed with heavenly melodies,
Thus they followed the charm of his song
Through the depths of sonorous waves ...
Thus they followed the charm of his words '
Spellbound into longing tones
Thus they called out loud:' Oh, play !, Oh, speak! '
And resurrect the sleeping princess! '"

- Maryla Wolska

This poem was only published in Kurier Warszawski on January 19, 1919, three days after Paderewski was introduced as Prime Minister, when the wish expressed in the poem had come true. In addition to patriotic issues, Wolska also helped to change the image of women. Until then, the images of the mother Poles and the freedom fighter's trusted wife existed. Wolska sat down together with other poets such as Maria Komornicka and Maria Grossek-Korycka , she created the image of women as a personality standing up for their rights and self-realization.
